MP Marilyn Gladu welcomes National Support from the Canadian Medical Association on C-277, an Act providing for the Development of a Framework on Palliative Care in Canada

(Sarnia, ON, Aug. 25, 2016) Today MP Marilyn Gladu (Sarnia-Lambton) is pleased to announce that the Canadian Medical Association has come out in support of C-277, her recently introduced private members legislation focused on palliative care. The endorsement came as a result of the Ontario Medical Association delegation (led by Dr. Pamela Liao of Toronto) calling for support of the legislation as a resolution. This was strongly endorsed by the whole membership at the Canadian Medical Association General Council Meeting in Vancouver this week.

According to Dr. Pamela Liao (MD CCFP), “Canadian doctors have spoken in strong favour for a national strategy on palliative care. Our motion supporting Bill C-277 passed with an overwhelming majority, at the 149th meeting of the Canadian Medical Association. I look forward to when all Canadians can have equitable access to quality end of life care.”

MP Marilyn Gladu applauds the CMA for their support of her PMB: “I welcome the support of the CMA, especially due to their unique understanding of the importance of palliative care, and how my bill is tailor-made to work with the various health systems in place across the provinces and territories, to ensure we can give Canadians access to the end-of-life care they deserve as an option.  Time and time again, Canadians have stated clearly they wish to live as well as they can for as long as they can. My legislation will have a positive impact in this regard, and I am calling on the Federal Health Minister to allow her caucus to vote freely on my private members bill when my bill comes before MPs this fall in Canada’s Parliament.”

C-277 now has numerous national, non-partisan advocacy groups, including the Canadian Nurses Association and the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians that have come out publicly in support of it. For a complete listing please visit:
